Using Your Tempest Data with IFTTT to Create Light Alerts & More
While your Tempest Weather System can notify you of rain onset via smartphone alert, some folks may want something a bit more...visual! That’s where the Tempest Weather System and Phillips Hue smart light bulbs come in. By using a cool pairing platform called If This, Then That (IFTTT), you can use your Tempest data to change the color of your lightbulbs when it starts to rain. IFTTT is a great tool to turn your weather data into real, working notifications, automation, and more!
HOW TO USE IFTTT
IFTTT is simple and easy to use and is designed to connect devices that were not natively integrated. Using the service will allow you to link your Tempest with third-party apps, devices, and products so that you can get the most out of your weather data. Connect with applets already made by Tempest users and staff, or create your own in just a few simple steps. Learn more about IFTTT and how to create your own applets here and browse applets already live and being used here.
TURNING YOUR BEDROOM BLUE
Using the Phillips Hue smart multi-colored lightbulbs, your Tempest data, and an IFTTT applet, you can turn your bedroom (or any room) blue when it’s freezing or raining. You can also trigger your Hue light to blink when rain starts falling. But users aren't limited by existing applets or colors, and creating your own applet could enable you to turn your light red when temperatures exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, or turn purple when wind speed exceeds 12 mph. The possibilities are endless!
CREATING YOUR OWN IFTTT APPLETS
This page outlines the various triggers and actions available with Tempest data and Phillips Hue smart bulbs. When you know what trigger and action you'd like to create, click the "Create" button in IFTTT and get started! Not quite sure where to start? OTHER WAYS TO USE IFTTT
The Tempest Weather System integrates with a variety of third-party applications and systems so that you can create your very own smart home. Connect with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Home, log your data to your computer automatically, or use and create cool integrations with IFTTT to help take care of your family’s home and yard. Creating a weather-conscious smart home has never been easier with the integrations available with IFTTT. Here are a few other ways to leverage your Tempest data:
- Triggering your smart home processor when your alarm clock goes off is quite easy through IFTTT if you use Amazon Alexa for your alarm clock. For example, in the winter, users could set their furnace set point to 69 degrees, so the alarm would trigger the furnace to turn on, warming the house so it is comfortable for family members to take showers, eat breakfast, and get ready for their daytime activities. - Get notifications for the types of weather alerts that matter to you, and create automatic processes around your home that can be triggered by specific weather parameters. Reminding yourself to bundle up when it’s cold or cover your outdoor plants if it’s going to freeze.
